Plum Brandy

1 pound ripe red or purple plums 2 cups sugar 4 cups vodka Pierce each plum in several places with a sharp tined fork. Put them into a large glass jar with a snug lid. Stir the sugar and vodka together and pour the mixture over the plums. Cover. Leave the container in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Shake the jar gently every 2 to 3 days for 6 weeks. When the 6 weeks have passed, take out the plums, strain the liqueur into one or more decorative bottles, adorn with trimmings and give as gifts (or keep them yourself!) Makes about 6 cups
